My name is Janet and I'm addicted to words! I love them. With a passion. Words are art. They're freedom. They're pleasure. They make my heart sing, skip and frolic! They anchor my soul.

A-Confession

My name is Janet and I'm addicted to words! I love them. With a passion. Words are art. They're freedom. They're pleasure. They make my heart sing, skip and frolic! They anchor my soul.

Me! I'm confident I wore those red
patent-leather shoes with everything!

A-Story

Mom and Dad
Mom and Dad with some of Mom's creations!

I grew up in a home surrounded by creativity. I am the youngest of three. A sister at the top of the order with a brother in between. Dad worked. Mom stayed home, but she was no ordinary housewife!

She made stuff. String pictures. Headbands. Barrettes. Wig heads (don't ask!). Shadow boxes from old sewing machine drawers. She could routinely be found covered in gesso with a paint brush in one hand and a roll of string in the other. Dad engineered her ideas. Working evenings to make her designs come to life.

On the weekends, mom and dad loaded us in the car - along with my mother's creations - and drove to a neighboring city's arts and crafts show. My parents loved everything about it! Selling the goods and visiting with the customers and other artists and craftsmen.

me all dressed up!

I can honestly say that my sister, brother and I didn't exactly define this as fun but, nevertheless, this is how we grew up! Waiting in the car many times while our parents rummaged through an antique store or hiding on the floorboard of the car while mom dug a broom stick out of a neighbor's garbage! So, despite the many protests of our youth we all ended up in the antique business in 2000! www.rubbishandcompany.com

This is where I rediscovered my love of words in the form of vintage flashcards from my school days. Simple - single words printed in black ink on manila stock. I arranged them in creative and endearing ways. I quickly learned that my passion for words was shared by my customers!

A-Birth

Now in my forties the unanswered question in my life remained: what do I want to be when I grow up? My precious husband - who has not always understood me creatively - but who has never hesitated to encourage my creative dreams looked at me one day and asked "What do you love?" And I answered, simply "I love words!"
